GÖOD SUSTAINABLE NEWS / INNOVACIONES: ¡TENEMOS UN 8VO CONTINENTE!

This new continent is the only one that has been completely designed by a human being: the architect Lenka Petráková from Slovakia, who has just won the 2020 Grand Prix Award for Architecture and Innovation of the Sea.

This new continent has a purpose: not only to design a concept that cleans the ocean but one that also restores its health.

This new continent is a "totally self-sufficient living organism", says its creator. The station removes plastic from the sea and houses research and education facilities as well as an ocean plastic recycle center. It produces its own energy and is equipped with greenhouses and desalination centers.

We are the most intelligent species, they say, even though many times we have focused that talent on just producing more without thinking about the consequences that more can bring us. One of the results of this is that by 2050 scientists predict that there could be more plastic than fish in the sea.

Fortunately, humans also use their amazing brains to innovate on devices that correct the ´mistakes´ we have been making. This island is a perfect example of this, as it has been designed to be located between California and Hawaii where the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, the largest accumulation of plastic in the world in the oceans, three times the size of France, is currently located.

"I realized how destroyed the oceans are and how many species are extinct, how much pollution is there, and that the parts that may have never seen a human being, feel the effects of our activities," she says.

Hopefully we will see more and more innovations like this, created to improve the general, and not of the individual, well-being. If the oceans and marine animals are going to feel our impact, it should be in a positive way. In the end, we are all in this together and we cannot survive without them.

This is a great initiative to solve one of the biggest problems we face right now: pollution. The main thing is to not generate garbage in the first place, but since there is so much in the world already, we cannot ignore it.

It's amazing how ingenious human beings can be, especially when we think about the well-being of the entire planet.
